| Q: How did you get started in racing? | |
A: My uncle and my dad drag raced. I picked it up from them. I was about 16. I started out on an old '75 Ironhead Sportster. It ran in the 12.60s. |
| Q: How did you and Julie meet? | |
A: We met at an aftermarket Harley shop. We both worked there. |
| Q: What's the toughest part of being on the road so much? | |
| A: Just the time being away from home, but I'm lucky because Julie's with me at all the races. |
| Q: What was it like the first time you made a pass on a top fueler? | |
A: I made my first pass on a fueler in 1990. I was going from a low 9 second bike to a 7 second bike. I just remember the bike seemed real big and it accelerated hard. You have to launch it hard to get it off the line - no risk, no reward. |
| Q: Have you ever tried any other form of racing? | |
A: I've done some bracket racing with a Chevy running in the low 13s. |
| Q: On a top fueler, have you ever felt like you made a perfect pass? | |
A: Not yet. There's always more. Even in my two fastest passes, I felt like the bike had more in it. Hopefully it will come soon. |
| Q: How do you get along with your competitors in AHDRA? | |
A: In Top Fuel, I get along good with most of the guys. Everyone helps each other out. And we have a track mom, Lynn DeGood. She's always there taking care of us, cooking and feeding us. |
| Q: What has been your most memorable win? | |
A: Probably Rockingham in '01. That was a tough one. The truck broke down on the way out there. In the semis, we broke a motor and hit the wall. Swapped motors just in time and took the win in the final. |
| Q: What do you do to stay motivated when the chips are down? | |
A: Work on stuff. Just have to keep working. We don't have a lot of guys, so we don't have much time. There's no other way - just keep working. |
| Q: What do you enjoy most about drag racing? | |
A: Going for the perfect pass. |
| Q: Who did you look up to when you were growing up? | |
A: Everyone taller than me... no, I'd have to say my dad. |
| Q: What was your best subject in school? | |
A: Math. |
| Q: What accomplishment are you most proud of? | |
A: Getting married to Jules. That and winning two consecutive IHRA Top Fuel titles. |
| Q: if you could have any other job in the world, what would it be? | |
A: I think I'd want to race Funny Car. |
| Q: Where do you enjoy being the most? | |
A: At the racetrack. |
| Q: What do you see yourself doing ten years from now? | |
A: Drag racing. |
| Q: What makes you laugh? | |
A: When I think about something I've done that was totally stupid, like repeating the same mistake. |
| Q: What is in your CD player now? | |
A: Offspring |
| Q: What was the last movie you saw? | |
A: I think the last movie we saw was "In Good Company". It was kind of … well, we had free passes. My favorite movie would have to be "Gone in 60 Seconds". |
| Q: What's your favorite flavor of ice cream? | |
A: Rocky Road |
