FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Why do mufflers blue?
A: Mufflers can discolor for any number of reasons; not rejetting can cause
discoloration, or too rich or too lean a jetting may also cause it. Small
diameter mufflers can also discolor due to the heat generated by their size.
Q: Do your pipes come with exhaust gaskets?
A: No, you will need to contact your local dealer.
Q: What is your best performing pipe?
A: The Pro Pipe HS and Power Chambered exhaust systems are our best
performing exhaust systems for Softails, Dynas, Sportsters and Dressers.
Q: What is the horsepower and torque gain with your exhaust?
A: Generally, on a stock V-Twin, installing our complete systems and an air
filter system is good for a 10 ft/lbs torque and 10 hp increase.
Q: Will your pipes work with the baffles removed?
A: We do not recommend the removal of the baffles due to the large loss in
torque and midrange you will experience.
Q: Can I use torque cones with your exhaust?
A: Yes, but we have not seen any significant gains or losses by the use of
cones.
Q: How do your exhaust systems compare with other aftermarket pipes?
A: The looks, installation and quality of our pipes speak for themselves. We
feel we have the best balance between sound levels and performance.
Q: I have your Pro Pipe HS and want to put the competition baffle in it.
Will this work ok?
A: The competition baffle is intended for racing use. It is designed for increasing peak horsepower, meaning that there will be a loss in torque compared to the standard baffle that comes pre-installed.
Q: Can I get replacement parts for your exhaust systems?
A: Yes, you can special order mufflers, heat shields or headpipes.
Q: Do you offer custom-made exhaust systems?
A: No, Unfortunately we do not offer custom made exhausts.
Q: Where is my closest dealer?

A: The S4 exhaust systems are made with stainless steel while the SS2R
exhaust systems are made of mild steel.
Q: Do you make a complete exhaust system in the S4?
A: We do not offer complete exhaust systems in the S4 at this time.
Q: Will the S4 end cap fit my SS2R?
A: No, the end cap and baffle designs are different and therefore do not
interchange.
PIPE TERMINOLOGY
Power Chamber - The race-inspired Power Chamber is a unique crossover system that delivers the power and performance advantages of a 2-into-1 race system, yet keeps the intimidating look of a 2-into-2 drag pipe. The Power Chamber uses the volume of both mufflers to improve scavenging of each cylinder for more efficient combustion. The end product is more power, more torque and one perfect sound.
Full Coverage Heat Shields - Vance & Hines pioneered aftermarket heat shields. 220 degrees of coverage to eliminate the sight of bluing head pipes or mufflers. Also acts as a barrier to protect from the heat of the head pipes and mufflers.
Stepped Headers - A racing concept taken to the street. Vance & Hines has long utilized stepped headers in its sport bike and racing applications. The steps create different speeds for the exhausts gases to travel creating more power and torque.
Muffler Body - The portion of the exhaust system which the baffle is attached to. The muffler body area is typically the portion which assists in building up back pressure and lowering the sound levels of the exhaust gases with different baffle designs.
Head Pipes - The pipes directly off the cylinder heads.
Baffles - Baffles are commonly used to reduce the sound levels of exhaust and also aid in the build up of back pressure. Vance & Hines engineers design each baffle to match the engine and exhaust for the best possible performance and sound quality.
Exhaust Gaskets -Seals the head pipe to the cylinder head. The gaskets should be replaced when the pipe is removed.
Hot Tips -Optional tip designs by Vance & Hines for the Longshots and Straightshots, allowing the rider to easily customize their exhaust system looks.
